Laurence McManus
(Writer, Director, Producer)
Raised in the New Forest, the subtleties and strange-hoods of small-town England were formative in his development as a filmmaker. Having directed the film Spinning Frame for exhibition at Aviation House, London as well as producing the short comedy series Spoonsville for the British Comedy Guide, he sought to return to his passions in true absurdism and celebrate a countryside that defined his adolescence. The Wind and the Whimpering followed. Above all, Laurence’s passion is found in making moments; thick, visceral, often hypnotic parcels of time which reveal beauty and horror. Laurence has a strong belief in the willingness of an audience to understand something they are not familiar with. That when faced with strangeness, we seek to understand and when confronted with elusive characters, we inspect ourselves.
Judyta Potocka
(Director of Photography)
A post-graduate filmmaker and visual artist, Judyta has worked across the UK and Europe on indie short, feature and experimental pieces and is a recipient of numerous awards. Mei Bignall’s feature directorial debut Butterfly, Lost for which she was the cinematographer entered festival circulation in 2021 to acclaim. In November of 2021, she wrapped production on Bert & Amanda, a super 16mm short directed by previous collaborator Joe Olmstead. In March 2022, her work was published in the international, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal of surveillance studies Surveillance & Society. Her work with camera, although inescapably voyeuristic, is equally sympathetic. Led by instinct and shaped by craft, Judyta’s curiosity to extend the moment and move to its emotional rhythm breeds the organic and unexpected.
Andie Scott
(Production and Costume Designer)
A mercurial infusion of talent, ingenuity and practical application, Andie Scott lovingly designed the world of The Wind and the Whimpering. As a fine artist, she has had her work exhibited in London, New York and Paris. On stage her production design pedigree was recently showcased in the acclaimed From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads written and directed by Adrian Berry and touring into its third year and her circus productions include devised pieces directed by dark clown Peta Lily; Every Day Every Day and Strange Forces at the National Centre for Circus Arts and for Lost in Translation Circus. Andie’s sculpting of our world’s texture and palette were perpetually inspiring and uncannily portrayed Laurence’s imagined world in conflict with its own fiction.
